I posted these a little while ago, but now I've settled into my non-Murdoch/non-Fairfax news sources, these are my preferred Australian news and current affairs sites:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/
http://www.sbs.com.au/news/
http://www.theguardian.com/au
http://theconversation.com/au
I check those more or less daily.
The ones below update less frequently, but are still excellent sources of information.
http://theaimn.com/
https://newmatilda.com/
http://eurekastreet.com.au/
http://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/
http://www.themonthly.com.au/
They're all very good sites featuring content from veteran journalists, commentators, and experts. You'll find very familiar and respected names on all of the above. I do my research; these are good quality news sources.
And yes, I am feeling a little Schadenfreude at how much money Murdoch's Australian papers are haemorrhaging, to the point of needing to be held afloat by his other businesses. Good riddance.
