- I have new icons!

- In the time it took my brother to get dressed today, I folded the laundry, swept up the leaves, weeded the garden, made the fire, did some writing, fixed the washing machine, and made lunch. @_@

- I have learnt that chopping wood is fantastic exercise for your abs.

- I've also learnt that two hours of chopping wood leads to blisters. My poor hands.

- My niece is trying to tiptoe into my room, and every time I glance over at her, she ducks down behind my bed. It's adorable.

- My queer dream superteam would include: Midnighter, John Constantine, Bunker, Batwoman, and Wonder Woman.

Batwoman (Kate Kane) would be the leader. Midnighter and Wonder Woman would be the heavy hitters. Bunker (Miguel Jose Barragan) would be the youth connection. Constantine needs to be included because I needed one Dark Arts hero, and he's also able to think outside the box.

Ideally, I would have liked to include an interstellar presence, but I can't link of a queer alien I'm familiar with. Earth-2 Alan Scott as a Green Lantern would be the closest to interstellar presence...

I was also considering Kaldur'ahm (N52 Jackson Hyde) and Harley Quinn as potential members.

- How did I become the mother of this household? I know I'm the eldest child (of the four of us siblings), but it hit me today, that I'm living with the two children I helped raise: my youngest sister (now 22) and her daughter (now 3). I never signed up to be a mother and yet here I am.

I'm running to house and doing everything at the moment because my sister's just been diagnosed with chronic pain, and she can't move well enough to do a lot of the chores, or even run after her daughter.

And while I made dinner yesterday, the kid drew all over herself. All over! She still has green hands. Argh!

- I am ecstatic that Birth.Movies.Death covered Wild Zero. I freaking love that movie! The most rock-and-roll movie I have ever seen! It's amazing. A guitar neck containing a sword, used to cut down a UFO! That is a scene I will remember for life!

- The Problem
To put it bluntly, The Problem is that DC wants to be Marvel, and they have for the past 50 years.
I call it The Problem and I think I have a pretty good reason for that, but to be honest, that desire has actually led to some of the best DC stories ever printed — arguably some of the best comics ever printed, so it’s not entirely a bad thing.

This is a very entertaining read on the history of DC Comics and their relationship with Marvel.

- When I was in high school, Brian Greig was the only openly gay politician I knew of. Today he's writing in The Guardian, reflecting on those times, and how little has changed:
History teaches us that wishing gay rights issues would just go away always backfires, and suppressing this issue will only serve to make it a key focus in the election.

- I love this article: Superman and the Damage Done.
Grace is a word that I have used a number of times here, and I have meant that in multiple ways, both as a description of physical movement and as a way of behaving. Superman can be firm, but is always polite, and he does not hold his powers as a cudgel above others... unless it's Zack Snyder's Superman.

Now I'm thinking of the DC trinity in spiritual terms. If Superman is grace, Batman is sacrifice, and Wonder Woman is mercy. At least, that's how I think of them.

I'm pretending the current cinematic "Znyder-verse" doesn't exist, LA LA LA!

I've made a list of all the comic book films I've seen. It amounts to about 24 movies, depending on whether you count Tintin as a "comic book film".

So here's what I've come up with so far, in alphabetical order:

This has all been prompted by discussion over the upcoming Batman V Superman, which I still don't know what to make of. My favourite live-action Batman film has been Batman Begins, in great part because I like the villains Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul (meanwhile, I think the Joker needs to take a long walk off a short pier). But I get the impression that Batman Begins is not most people's preference.

So I'm sure I'll see Batman V Superman eventually, but I can't predict what I'm going to think of it. I kinda like the trailers, and some of the rumours sound promising, but that's no certainty I'll like the end product. Maybe I'll just remain torn.

We shall see.

Inspired by these three chuckle-heads, I decided to make a list of my favourite comic characters. From all comics.

- I can't believe the year is going to be over in a month's time.

- Last week, the pet rabbit tried so hard to escape, that it gave itself a concussion jumping against the roof of its hutch.

- New game my family loves: Love Letter: Batman. Which I don't consistently lose, for once!

- I'm getting such a kick out of talking about comics to my family, cause I find myself saying: "I love Dick. But only when we're talking about Batman." Because I am easily amused. It's still true though.

- I am uncomfortable with the modern Robins though, because I don't like to see a ten year-old kid being beaten up by an adult, even if they can defend themselves. It's just uncomfortable to see. I prefer the classic Robins who were predominantly quick and agile, so few people could ever even touch those pixie boys.

- This is so cool: Altas of the DC Comics Universe.

- Of all the comic book TV shows I do watch, I wasn't going to catch Lucifer because it sounded boring. Then I saw the trailer. It looks fun. And ridiculous. Thus fun. The fact that it's pissing off conservative Christians is an even better reason for me to check it out. Maybe at a fitting time like Christmas. [/bitter lapsed Catholic]

- I have not, however, seen Constantine, mainly because FUCKING GOYER!!

- From Bill Shorten's speech:
The Labor leader also argues that legalising same sex marriage sends a message of inclusion to younger Australians. “We are proud of you, for who you are. You belong.”
Everyone needs to hear that, not just young people. Thank you, Bill Shorten.
(The pictures I re-posted to my tumblr will tell you exactly what the government thinks of this bill.)

- But I completely agree with this too:
Parliament passed the Same‑Sex Relationships (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws—General Law Reform) Act 2008... that gave same-sex couples the same legal status as straight de facto couples... It could just as easily have been 'An Act to get those rowdy gays off our backs without us actually having to legislate for marriage equality...'. Of course it was still a huge achievement, but as is typical for Australia on these matters it was the kind of victory that left a lot of people tapping their watches and going 'yeah, well, about time, isn't it' rather than leaping into the air in celebration.

That's the thing about all these announcements of support and progress from politicians. They never leave me wanting to shout for joy. I only ever want to roll my eyes and go, "yeah, I'll believe it when I see it", or "well, that was half a step forward." No jubilation. Just a vague sort of despair tinging everything.
