Glee Squee

Look, people! I'm blogging about Glee again!
Mainly because Season 6, episode 6 is the most Brittana episode since like, season 2, episode 15 ("Sexy"), and I need to say something about last week's episode, okay?
Also, 6 pictures for 6x06, because, as if I was going to resist that! :p

This episode was all about the girls!
So let's start with the least significant story line this episode: I love that hopeful look on Kurt's face right at the end. He is not fooling anyone with his, "ooh, no one else? Liking this" expression. I am Really hoping Blaine broke up with he-who-shall-not-be-named, not just because I don't like that guy, but also because the last thing I want is for Blaine to cheat again, no matter who it's on or with.
Sam looking in choir room window at Mercedes by standing on a pile of jocks was hilarious! Love it!
Sam to Rachel: I'll admit I have a little thing for you, and with a nudge or two it could grow into a bigger thing.
Nudge #1: Sue hypnotising him, to disregard his hesitations.
Nudge #2: Mercedes outright telling him to go and hit that.
Sam/Rachel is sweet. I love how they just accept unquestioningly each other's eccentricities. They know each other well enough, and they've lived together long enough in New York, to just know and accept each other, and it's just a friendly, uncomplicated relationship.
I adore Sam/Mercedes, but I love this too. This is one love triangle I have nothing against. Wherever the show goes this season, whichever direction it takes, it'll be all good to me.

Also the Mercedes and Sam jealousy thing charmed me completely. Happy for you and joking is how all the best exes should feel. I'm glad to see they could have a friendly, mature, and productive conversation.
Mercedes giving back to Rachel, what Rachel gave her in "Night of Neglect".
Mercedes: Mentors need mentors.
I like that friendship.
And Rachel falling apart was exactly what we needed to see. It's all about losing that idealism, but not the dream, because her heart hasn't changed. She's just older and wiser now. It's also wonderful to see her put herself back together, take a deep breath, and get back in the saddle. That's what she needs, and I'm so glad it was Mercedes who gave it back to her.

And finally, to the crux of the episode for me.
Santana's grandma is back, and now I feel vindicated because I remember people grumbling about how it was a great scene in "I Kissed A Girl" but we'd probably never see the woman again, because everyone thinks the Glee writers can't write. And sure, I have my issue with their writing (I have issues with everyone's writing, but I don't let imperfections stop me from enjoying the good that everyone is also capable of). I always figured they'd bring Grandma Lopez back before the end. And they have. So now I know I was reading Santana's story line right all along. Yay!
Brittany: You came out to Abuela ten years ago, okay? Times have changed.
Santana: It was three years ago, and nothing has changed for her.
Exactly. The world has changed, but not that much.
The world may have changed (it was certainly a different world in which I went to university) but individuals haven't changed, and when it's your closest friends or family among those that haven't changed, it doesn't matter what the rest of the world is like, when they are what matters to you.

Yep, I still love my Brittany/Santana. Santana looks so "at home" with Brittany, so content and settled. And Brittany's mature confidence in herself? Can I marry her too?
Every time there's an episode like this, I think, forget Kurt and Blaine, I want to see Brittany and Santana happily ever after!
Alma Lopez: So you come into my home, treat me with kindness, lure me here, and trick me into seeing my granddaughter and hear her sing?
Brittany: Yes. Because I love Santana with everything, and I would do anything for Santana, okay? Even tricking a sick old woman.
I love when Brittany is stubborn and a bit catty. I keep reminding people: she was one of the original unholy trinity, she spied on the glee club for Sue, she graffitied year books! She's not all kindness and sunshine.
But I'm also glad it's not neatly resolved in one episode. As brilliant as she is, even Brittany's magic can't fix everything.
Still, it's Brittany's episode, she gets to shine, and I'm glad to see it.
Also, her parents are wonderful! I can't stand Ken Jeong on Community (just because his character irritates me), but he's good fun here, and Jennifer Coolidge as Brittany's mother is perfect! Ditzy, but loving and warm.

I'm adding this sceencap for the sole reason that I need to vent about the fandom.
Ok, so a few seasons back, a bunch of fans started comparing and counting the number of kisses shared between the straight couples and the gay couples, and noting how big the disparity was. You may have heard me complain about that here before.
That never sat well with me, because:
1) There are more straight people in the world than gay people. That's just a fact.
2) The disparity is far larger on other shows. Glee is a veritable smorgasbord of representation! Where's the complaining about other shows? Why pick on the one show that actually tries?
3) You are less likely to see public displays of affection between gay couples. Because the world is still a scary place to be anything other than straight.
4) Literally counting kisses always felt fetishistic to me. Like that was all that mattered.
5) Numbers are easy to quantify, but they're the absolute poorest method of literary analysis. Context matters. Quality matters. Detail and emotion are far more important to take into consideration when you're analysing any text.
6) Most of the focus was on Kurt and Blaine. Few people ever mentioned Brittany and Santana in their complaints. And usually as afterthoughts. Red flags go up right there.
7) I am queer. I am human. And I am not a prop, nor a "gotcha" moment. I don't like having words put in my mouth by people telling me what I should be thinking or feeling, or how I should be responding to a text. And I don't like being trotted out when it's convenient for other people, and only then.
8) The story is not freaking over yet! What's with the judging not-good-enough half way through a story? That's like putting down a book halfway through and complaining that the writer isn't giving you any conclusions.
*muttergrumble*
And this season: there are four couples being focused on: Rachel/Sam, Brittany/Santana, Kurt/Blaine, and Becky/Darrell. Half of those are gay. Only the first three couples have kissed (as of this episode). I believe that's more gay kisses than straight kisses this season.
Yeah, I'm feeling a bit smug right now. I think I'm allowed to.
And the people who were making those arguments in 2012-2014? Most of them have gone on to other fandoms. No surprises, but buckets of irony.

And finally, I LOVE THE MUSIC! I'll Never Fall In Love Again! What The World Needs Now! They Long To Be Close To You! Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)!
*spiraling*
Loving the music this season in general, cause I actually know most of it, and not just know it, I know most of the lyrics to all these songs! Yes, I'm ancient, but... LOVE!!
I'm going to miss this show when it's over. I can't wait to watch the rest of the season, but I will miss it when it's over.
