Random Disjointed Entry
Oct. 23rd, 2010 06:15 pmAnother bunch of links to stuff I've been reading; this time the good news outweighs the bad. Yay!
- How many of us are happy to call ourselves geeks today? It's definitely a newly "cool" label. The Evolution of the Geek.
- Someone has pointed out:
While the anagram to 'Tom Marvolo Riddle' is 'I am Lord Voldemort,' as my good friend pointed out, 'Albus Dumbledore' becomes 'Male bods rule, bud!'
- Renewed push for Australian gay marriage as poll shows 78 per cent support.
- Role-playing video games offering more ways for gamers to play as gay characters.
Gamemakers are giving players methods of portraying gay characters in role-playing games, the genre that bestows gamers with the power to customize characters from the outset. Unlike the static storylines of a TV show or film, role-playing games offer an individualized experience that's usually defined by a player's choices.
- So you think gay men are promiscuous?.
Other parts of the data were so expected as to reinforce rather than invert stereotypes: that gay men like Lady Gaga, The Devil Wears Prada and Six Feet Under, and that lesbians are obsessed with the L Word and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But this reveals a universal truth about human nature: people, of all races, orientations, genders and classes, crave depictions of their lives in the arts. We need narratives we can relate to.
This is why Stonewall was right to condemn the BBC in July for failing to tell our stories, pointing out that only 1.7% of the public service broadcaster's most popular programmes depicted gay people.
Don't even get me started on the number of QUILTBAG people in Australian TV shows. Australian TV is dire for minority representation of any kind.
- Here, have some cute puppies.
