Glee 30 questions meme. Because I was bored at work. Spoilers up to and including season 2, episode 10, A Very Glee Christmas, under the cut.

- Apparently the insects that were flying all around my work place last summer were Black Flower Wasps, a native wasp. One of the patients said they might be native bees, but none of the native bee species have these beautiful bright blue wings, and I saw one of them burrowing into the ground. So I'm pretty sure they were Black Flower Wasps. They were beautiful!

- From here:

15 most influential writers

The Rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen authors (poets included) who have always influenced you and will always stick with you. List the first 15 you can recall in no more than 15 minutes, and they don't have to be listed in order of relevance to you.

The List )

- Missing scene from Doctor Who, between the season 5 episodes The Eleventh Hour and The Beast Below.

- O_O. Is that you, Tom Felton? Wow!

- The Face of Sydney.
Using specialist techniques, thousands of portraits of individual people have been compacted to provide a representative male and female "look" for the 160,000 residents of Sydney's City of Villages.

Except for Haymarket, they mostly look Caucasian, although 3% Indigenous participants is not bad, considering the Indigenous population is 2% of the population of the whole country.

I would love to see one of these done of Parramatta, which has the highest migrant population in Australia. I once counted 1:3 Caucasian:non-Caucasian people in Parramatta, realising of course that Caucasian doesn't necessarily mean they were born here and that non-Causasian doesn't mean they weren't, just like I wasn't. But given a project completely based on appearance as the above project is, the face of Parramatta would look quite different.

- P!nk's new video is out! In more ways than one. I just watched it, and I'm a little embarrassed to admit it made me cry. The video shows all the people who don't fit the "ideal" in today's Western society: Asian, African, fat, old, gay, geeky, and it's the most beautiful video I've seen in a long time (although the thing with the milking is weird).

"So raise your glass, if you are wrong in all the right ways!
All my underdogs,
We will never be (never be) anything but loud and nitty gritty!
Dirty little freaks, won't you come on, and come on, and
Raise your glass!"

- NaNo post is here.
elfinblaze: (Harry Potter Firefly)
That'd be right. I dream about a zombie apocalypse and wake up without a headache for the first time all week. Zombies killed my headache! Or maybe I just slept well for the first time all week, but that explanation isn't nearly as entertaining.

- [livejournal.com profile] viciousdisorder, you need to have a Voldemort piñata at your next birthday party, so we can all beat the shit out of him. :D Or something along those lines.

- Can a Woman Be a "Great American Novelist"?: If you doubt unconscious bias exists, you live in a man's world..

- Ok, we all know stereotypes are bad, but some of these are actually funny.

Actually, a lot of these links I post are partly for my own reference, things I want to come back to, re-read and think about some more.

And finally, this is what I do when I'm bored at work and have run out of things to read: I fill out random memes I find online.

Still nothing to update with. So I did a questionnaire.

That meme that's going round, because I was bored:

101 fic kinks
Master List: http://stultiloquentia.dreamwidth.org/124521.html

You do not have to go as high as 101, they don't all have to be sex-related (although they can be), they don't have to be all-the-time bullet-proof, just things that often hit your buttons when reading fic. And you're allowed to swipe other people's kinks.

Trope Meme

So, there's this fanfic trope meme going 'round, only I think it's too short and it doesn't cover nearly enough tropes/clichés. So I made my own, with help from [livejournal.com profile] eliade's trope list.

Check off tropes you've written:

Aliens made them do it: No.
Alternate Universe: Yeah.

I see there are plenty I still have to do.

I obviously spend too much time online when I have a few days off.

The Rules:
(1) Turn on your Ipod or MP3 player.
(2) Go to SHUFFLE songs mode.
(3) Write down the first 15 songs that come up--song title and artist--NO editing/cheating, please.

01. Schatten und Licht, by Laith Al-Deen
[A German pop singer; my sister bought some of his music; he's not bad.]
02. 超喜歡你 (Chao Xi Huan Ni), by 飛輪海 (Fahrenheit)
[From the TV show 花樣少年少女 (Hua Yang Shao Nian Shao Nu)]
03. Love Can Move You, by Savage Garden
[High school flashbacks!]
04. If I Could Reach Your Heart, from Ka (by Cirque du Soleil)
[One of the songs I've been listening to often recently, incidentally]
05. 胎音 (Tai Yin), by 五月天 (May Day)
[Another Taiwanese band. I really like May Day actually.]
06. Stella Splendens, by Adaro
[A rock song in Latin by a German band; it's great!]
07. Shut Up/Kiss Me, by Paul McDermott feat. Fiona Horne
[More high school flashbacks!]
08. It's All Tears (unplugged), by HIM
[I actually like the unplugged version better than the original]
09. 我要飛 (Wo Yao Fei), by F.I.R.
[What's with all the Taiwanese bands? I don't even have that much Chinese language music!]
10. We Are The DA, by Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls
[First WRock song to pop up]
11. 灼熱BLADE (shakunetsu Blade), by コタニキンヤ (Kotani Kinya)
[First Japanese song to pop up]
12. Dawn Mantras, by Ross Edwards
[A classical piece by an Australian composer]
13. Over the Rainbow, by SIAM SHADE
[Yay, another Japanese song. I love SIAM SHADE]
14. Stabat Mater, by Andreas Scholl
[This man has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. He's a counter-tenor and his voice is so crisp and clear, it's absolutely beautiful to listen to]
15. Bitch, by Meredith Brooks
[Probably the only song on my list that most people will have heard]

I guess I really do have ecclectic music taste.

Good night, world.

Looks like I have my internet back. Hopefully for a while. *crosses fingers* Not that I have anything to update with anyway, so instead I'll do this:

From [livejournal.com profile] ashkitty:

Book meme:
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.

"On the quays and in the House of the Sea-Guild he asked of ships that might be going out north or west to Enlad, Andrad, Oranéa."
- The Earthsea Quartet, Ursula Le Guin.

Ok, I admit I didn't pick the closest book but only because the closest one was my Latin dictionary and as such doesn't have sentences. The fifth line on that page however is:

Latona, -ae f mother of Apollo and Diana

Just for completeness' sake.

Keeping in mind that there are very few men that I would actually consider shagging... but I'm bored and don't want to go to bed yet.

1. Bold the names of guys you'd definitely shag.
2. Italicise the names of guys you might shag after a little persuasion.
3. Leave the guys who don't do anything for you alone.
4. Put a question mark after the guys you've never heard of.
5. Strike the guys you wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole.

The list )

Now I want a list of women. ^.^

Rules: When you see this meme immediately perform a screen capture of your desktop. It is best that no icons be deleted before the screen capture so as to add to the element of fun.

1. Go to your desktop and press the Print Scrn key (located on the right side of the F12 key).
2. Open a graphics program (like Picture Manager, Paint, or Photoshop) and doing a Paste (CTRL + V).
3. Post the picture on your blog. You can also give a short explanation on the look of your desktop if you want. You can explain why you prefer such a look or why it is full of icons. Things like that.

It features stills from the movie Imagine Me & You, which is such a sweet movie and I adore it.

I went out for lunch with my family today to celebrate my sister completing her undergraduate degree. Got attacked by rather painful period cramps ten minutes after arriving there, which was less than fun, but after I got the pain to settle it was quite nice sitting by the window, in the sunshine.

And that's about all I have to write about. Spent the rest of the day in bed.

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed.
Well, let's see.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicise those you intend to read.

the list )

I started reading Ruth Park's autobiography today. Amazing reading and it's obvious from the first sentence that she's a writer, because wow, the images she conjures. It reads like a novel even though it's non-fiction.
